A better AI image prompt describes a visual system, not just a subject. The most reusable prompts define the subject, medium, composition, light, palette, texture, camera or rendering language, and the details that must not appear.

The eight-part AI image prompt formula

  1. Subject — who or what the image is about.
  2. Action or state — what the subject is doing and how it feels.
  3. Environment — the setting and relevant spatial details.
  4. Medium — photograph, watercolor, gouache, risograph, 3D render, collage, or another process.
  5. Composition — framing, viewpoint, balance, negative space, and aspect ratio.
  6. Lighting and palette — direction, softness, contrast, and controlled colors.
  7. Surface and finish — paper tooth, grain, halftone, brushwork, materials, or lens behavior.
  8. Constraints — no text, logos, watermark, extra objects, or unwanted rendering traits.

A reusable image prompt template

[Medium] image of [subject and action] in [environment]. [Composition and viewpoint]. [Lighting recipe]. [Palette]. [Texture, material, lens, or rendering details]. [Mood or editorial intent]. [Aspect ratio]. Avoid [specific failures, text, logos, watermark].

Character design prompts

Character prompts become more repeatable when they define role, silhouette, wardrobe, materials, expression, pose, and presentation separately. “Fantasy character” is vague; “field botanist with a triangular rain cape, worn brass specimen case, alert three-quarter pose, shape-language turnaround on warm paper” is directed.

Watercolor prompts

Authentic watercolor depends on physical behavior: paper, pigment, water, edge quality, layering, and untouched white. Describe transparent washes, granulation, blooms, dry-brush accents, and reserved white rather than relying on the word “watercolor” alone.

Portrait prompts

Separate the person, expression, styling, framing, lens, key light, fill, environment, and finish. If realism matters, explicitly protect natural skin texture and state which retouching artifacts to avoid.

How to learn from a reference result

Work backward from the image. Identify the few decisions responsible for its identity: perhaps a hard crop, two-color palette, paper texture, and oversized geometric type. Keep those mechanisms, change the subject, and test whether the style remains recognizable.

Prompt Style Atlas pairs reference images with complete prompts so you can inspect that relationship rather than guessing from a title. Explore the AI Image Prompt Library or all visual styles.

Frequently asked questions

Should an AI image prompt name an artist?

You usually do not need to. Medium, period, composition, palette, materials, and process are more controllable and more portable across models than a single artist name.

How many style words should I use?

Use the smallest set that changes the image predictably. Remove synonyms and replace them with physical or compositional instructions.

Do negative prompts matter?

They are useful when they prevent predictable failures. Keep them specific: no readable text, no watermark, no duplicate objects, no plastic skin, or no mockup frame.
